Sunscreen Safety - New Regulations

You know what time of year it is, spring is finally here (well for the most part) and warmer weather is on its way. This means that parents will be reaching for those outdoor products to save the tender skin of their little ones, and hopefully themselves as well. I did a little research and found the “11 Best Sunscreens for Kids and Babies in 2019” (Thanks Good Housekeeping!) along with some helpful tips they gathered from professionals.

  • Tip #1: Use mineral sunscreens. According to new announcements made this year by the FDA, the only two safe ingredients until further notice are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. According to Environmental Working Group, avoid oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate.

  • Tip #2: If you’re planning a sunny vacation, a 6-ounce bottle may only last a couple of days so pack extra. Use lotion and stick formulas for kids and babies since spray sunscreen isn’t as effective.
